On a month-to-month foundation, retail gross sales remained unchanged from August to September (seasonally adjusted) and gross sales elevated by 8.2% in comparison with September 2021.
From the Census Bureau report:
Advance estimate for US retail and foodservice gross sales for September 2022, adjusted for differences due to the season and variations between holidays and dealing days, however not value modifications, was $684.0 billion. {dollars}, nearly unchanged of the earlier month, however 8.2% above September 2021. … The share change from July 2022 to August 2022 has been revised from 0.3% to 0.4% (± 0.2%).

September gross sales had been decrease than anticipated, however July and August gross sales had been revised greater, mixed.
